One of the great American songwriters, Tom Petty, has died at 66. According to the official statement from his family, Petty suffered cardiac arrest at his Malibu home early yesterday when he was taken to UCLA Medical Center, but could not be revived. He's said to have died peacefully at 8:40 PST.

Earlier in the day, CBS prematurely reported Petty's death based on some misinformation from LAPD which spawned many other outlets to report of Petty's death sourcing the CBS report before it was revealed that Petty was still 'clinging for life.'.

Petty was without doubt one of the great American songwriters who's songs have provided the soundtrack for many people's lives. Petty's music was so strong his appeal spanned from Rock fans to Folk fans to Punks to Pop fans to Grunge fans to Metal Heads. Tom Petty was loved by all. R.I.P. Tom Petty
