Burning Man co-founder dies at 70

Burning Man co-founder Larry Harvey died Saturday at the age of 70.

Harvey was the philosophical force behind Burning Man Festival. He was a San Francisco landscape gardener who built an oversized human effigy, doused it with gasoline and ignited a counter cultural phenomenon. The first Burning Man took place on a San Francisco beach in 1968. The event eventually grew into the seminal arts and culture festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert marked by the burning of a giant wooden sculpture of a man.

Harvey had been hospitalized after suffering a massive stroke earlier this month.
