Over the weekend, Chris Martin appeared at the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation 20th anniversary gala fundraiser and took the opportunity to poke fun a Leo’s apparent affinity for cargo shorts. Very clever, as Chris could have gone after the low hanging fruit like Leo’s reputation for fancying models, but he dug into Leo’s closet and found his cargo shorts! Chris sang, ‘”I studied him very closely…Personally, and on the Daily Mail website … for about five or six years. What became clear to me was his unbelievable service, his commitment to the business of cargo shorts. This is a guy who said ‘I’m going to save these shorts from extinction, they should’ve gone out about 25 years ago.’” Chris also acknowledged Leo’s work in Romeo + Juliet, Titanic, and The Aviator during the song.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the event and Leo’s cargo shorts raised about $500,000 in ticket sales ($10,000 each ticket) and an additional $7.5 million from the live auction.
